What Does a Remote Informatics Nurse Do?

As a remote informatics nurse, you work from home or outside of a clinical setting to collect data, analyze trends, and create more efficient systems for the medical industry, specifically for patient care. Your responsibilities require a lot of time spent on computer systems and administrative duties rather than direct interaction with a patient. Electronic medical records (EMRs) take up a large portion of your duties as you streamline the system and create user-friendly options. You introduce new technology, train others remotely, and provide feedback to the IT department to help improve the software. Informatics nurses also write policies, review clinical statistics, track quality initiatives, and handle project management.

How to Become a Remote Informatics Nurse

You need to be a registered nurse to work in informatics. An associate or bachelor's degree is sufficient for starting out in this field. The Informatics Nursing Certification is available and the most likely to be required. Certifications in healthcare information and management systems are also beneficial. Employers look for candidates with prior leadership or management experience, who have worked in healthcare positions before, and who are familiar with medical terminology and procedures. Other qualifications include analytical thinking skills, proficiency with technology, and the ability to retain large amounts of information. Communication skills are also essential for liaising between IT staff and other nurses. To work remotely, you must have reliable internet access and be able to manage your time efficiently.
