What Is the Job of a Remote Copy Editor?
Remote copy editors review written content for misspelled words, incorrect grammar, and other errors before it is published. Instead of working in the office, remote copy editors complete their tasks from home or another location outside the office with internet connectivity. As a remote copy editor, you diligently comb through the copy for mistakes, fact check statements for accuracy, verify sources, and cross-reference with other published texts to ensure the document is all original work. Depending on the organization you work for, you may also do some formatting and layout as you edit to make sure the text fits on the page properly.
How Do You Become a Remote Copy Editor?
There are no formal education requirements to become a remote copy editor, though many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field. Professional writing experience or prior editorial positions are a plus. Some aspiring remote copy editors obtain an internship or an entry-level position with a publishing firm or other agency that utilizes copy editors to gain hands-on experience in the field. Practice editing different kinds of copy to build a substantial portfolio before seeking remote copy editor jobs. Other important skills include computer and internet proficiency and knowing how to communicate well with writers and your department.
