What Is a R Programmer and How to Become One

An R programmer works with a unique computer language called R to perform duties such as statistical computing and data collection and analysis with the goal of optimization for a business. As an R programmer, you can use this language, which is open source, to create graphical representations or simulations of data as well as conduct analysis of that data. Other job duties include designing statistical models, formulating procedures, and providing technical assistance for clients. In this role, you can use your computer code knowledge to develop tools for a variety of different fields, from machine learning to statistical analysis for businesses to data mining for technology companies.

The principal qualifications for any R programmer job are knowledge of the R language and experience in the field in which you want to work. Similar to a web developer, you need expert coding skills and, preferably, fluency in one or more scripting languages, like Python. Employers may require that applicants have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, statistics, database engineering, or a related field. Some may accept job experience instead of a specialized degree. Furthermore, positions with advanced responsibilities may require several years of experience in a similar role. Different professional organizations offer certification in R, and some provide accreditation in the context of a specialty, such as business analytics.

The fields of data collection and analysis, machine learning, and statistical models continue to grow as more businesses look to “big data” to help run their businesses and make informed decisions. Since R programmers know the ins and outs of a computer system that can collect, customize, and organize data, they continue to be in demand among employers. If pursuing this career, you may be able to increase your job prospects by also gaining experience and certification in a related language, such as Python, or in statistics or a related mathematical field.

R programmers spend their time working with R language, but because of the full range of uses for R, they may find employment in a variety of fields. For example, you may use your knowledge of this computer tool to work as a data scientist, a data analyst, or a data architect. As an R programmer, you can also function as a database administrator, or as a specialist or consultant in statistical computing. Machine learning and software development are two other fields in which R programmers can thrive.
