What Is a Performance Manager?

A performance manager seeks to create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations. Rather than a traditional corporate system of employee appraisal and evaluation, performance managers try to communicate end goals and align each employee’s work with these aims. In this role, you may seek the development of benchmarks so that the company’s departments or groups can measure their progress concretely. This is an ongoing effort. Benchmarks and goals must change, so you must continually find new ways to measure progress and to inspire effort.

How to Become a Performance Manager

Performance Managers are natural team builders. They have a solid business acumen combined with the patience and motivation to train and support others. Most Performance Managers start with a bachelor’s degree, often in business or management. Some companies seek candidates who hold a master’s degree in business or statistics. You’ll need to be competent with managing data and identifying potential issues in company performance. To be eligible for a Performance Manager position, candidates must have at least five years of relevant work experience, often as a former hiring manager or project manager. Advanced capability with Microsoft Business tools and Microsoft Office is necessary, alongside statistical analysis tools like SAS and basic knowledge of CRM software. Aspiring Performance Managers should develop a portfolio of their successfully implemented cost savings and company improvements strategies.
