What Is a Part Time Computer Technician and How to Become One

As a part-time computer technician, your job is to service and repair hardware, install software, and service IT equipment for your clients. Computer technicians usually take one of two roles: Some work for specific companies or facilities, such as server data centers, while others provide repair services to the public. You can also work on-call to provide help when it is needed rather than staying at the repair center all the time. Some details of this job vary based on the kinds of customers you have. For example, data center technicians often focus on a few select models of hardware and software while technicians in senior communities may repair more old machines than the average computer technician.

The primary qualifications for becoming a part-time computer technician are several years of experience in a technical or data center support role and the ability to quickly research answers to unusual technical problems. Employers prefer applicants who have various industry maintenance licenses, such as a CCNA certification, as well as previous experience building and modifying computers. A college or technical degree can help you stand out from other applicants but is not a requirement for this position.
