What Does a Paint Process Engineer Do?
The responsibilities of a paint process engineer include analyzing and maintaining automated paint equipment to ensure each order meets or exceeds client expectations. This position is common in the automotive industry and for companies that produce components and other painted parts. In this role, you inspect and evaluate the paint job process, as well as a variety of pretreatment methods as needed, and conduct feasibility studies before offering price quotes. Your duties include developing, testing, and implementing processes using robotic spray paint systems and other applicator products, and you are expected to maintain and service these systems. It’s your job to communicate with customers, continuously analyze the equipment, and provide feedback to the engineering group as well as technical expertise in sales meetings.
What Are the Requirements to Become a Paint Process Engineer?
The preferred qualifications to become a paint process engineer include a bachelor’s degree in engineering and one to two years of paint application experience, as well as experience with pumping and fluid delivery equipment and robotics. You must be knowledgeable regarding the elements needed to make the manufacturing process work efficiently. You also need strong problem-solving, organizational, and multitasking skills. As the initial point of contact for customers, you should develop excellent customer service and communication skills, too. You must be physically fit to stand and walk during the majority of your shift, and you must know how to use hand tools.
What Is the Difference Between a Paint Process Engineer and a Paint Quality Engineer?
While there are similarities with the responsibilities of paint process engineers and paint quality engineers, such as ensuring paint jobs are of high quality and providing feedback, there are significant differences between these two positions. A paint process engineer oversees the automated or robotic systems to ensure they function in the best way possible while delivering improved results for customers. A paint quality engineer reviews paint shop quality metrics and presents reports to examine any issues that arise during the paint process. Paint quality engineers identify paint defects through microscopic analysis, determine the cause, and suggest improvements.
