As an optical engineering professional, your responsibilities include the design of instruments and products that rely on optics, from space telescopes to DVD players. Your specific duties and the level of education you need varies depending on the field in which you work

How to Become an Optical Engineer

Optical Engineers who find work in such areas as telescope lens design, laser technology, and fiber optic systems must have at least a bachelor’s degree. While some universities do offer a specific degree in optic engineering, majors in physics, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering can also be applicable for a career as an Optical Engineer. Other skills and areas of focus should be in mathematics, physics, electronics, chemistry, and related STEM subjects. While the majority of licensed Optical Engineers hold bachelor’s degrees, the most advanced jobs in the industry often go to those with master’s or even doctorate degrees. Depending on the specific job, you may also be required to earn a Professional Engineering (PE) license. The requirements vary based on the state, but it generally involves a few years of supervised work experience and passing an exam.

What Is an Optical Engineer?

An optical engineer is a scientist that oversees the development and application of devices that use light and optics. This could be anything from a basic telescope to a high tech medical laser. As an optical engineer, your responsibilities include researching the science behind the product, improving designs of an existing device, developing new devices, and testing them in their intended application. Most optical engineering work exists in the private sector, but you can also find positions at observatories, maintaining equipment and conducting research. You likely need a master’s degree in engineering or physics, though some employers will accept a bachelor’s degree. Optical engineering programs do exist, but they are uncommon.
