Networking Jobs - What Are They and How to Get One

Computer networking jobs involve designing, implementing, and maintaining an organization’s computer network. As a network engineer, first and foremost you need a comprehensive understanding of computer networking, recovery and backup, and computer hardware. You should also have strong problem-solving skills, allowing you to recognize, solve, and anticipate problems more easily. Specific jobs may require different skill sets, so keeping up to date with the latest technology and being flexible are essential skills for all network engineers.

A career in networking, particularly as a network engineer requires you have significant postsecondary education, typically at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Many engineers go on to pursue a master’s degree, and doing so will open further job opportunities to you. Some schools offer a specialty in computer system design, which can help with networking tasks. Finding a degree that focuses heavily on computers, programming, and networking is key. After earning your degree, voluntary certification programs can help you stay up to date with modern developments and skills.
