By ZipRecruiter Marketplace Research Team

What Are the Duties of a Meat Cutter Apprentice?

As a meat cutter apprentice, your duties are to assist a butcher with daily tasks in the butcher’s department of a grocery store, restaurant, or specialty shop. Your responsibilities are to weigh each package to ensure customers receive the right orders, prepare the workspace, and confirm that all equipment (such as slicers and knives) are in proper working order. You also check that you have an inventory of butcher’s paper or wrapping for the day.

How Do You Become a Meat Cutter Apprentice?

There are typically no formal qualifications to become a meat cutter apprentice. Many employers consider applicants with a high school diploma or GED certificate. Familiarity with the meat packaging industry is often a plus. As an apprentice, you do not need extensive knowledge because your role is to learn meat cutting skills under the guidance of a more experienced butcher. They will teach you how to cut and trim meat, the proper techniques for sausage-making and meat grinding, and other tasks such as how to inspect meat deliveries.

Where Can a Meat Cutter Apprentice Work?

A meat cutter apprentice can work in a variety of settings in the food industry. You can work at a specialty butcher’s shop, which may focus on a specific type of meat or preparation process, such as preparing halal or kosher meat. You can also work in a grocery store, where you learn from members of the butcher or deli department. Large warehouse club stores hire meat cutter apprentices as well. At some specialty restaurants, such as steakhouses or meat-centric establishments, the chef or butcher may hire an apprentice to assist with daily preparation.
