What Is a Management Engineer and How to Become One

A management engineer seeks improvement in the systems and processes that a company or organization uses. This type of process improvement specialist often works in the health services industry. People in this job perform analysis of the company’s current operations and work closely with management and employees to provide solutions. A management engineer may also focus on specific projects to make their completion as efficient and effective as possible.  

To pursue a career in engineering management, your education is the first of many qualifications. You need at least a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, such as electrical, mechanical, materials, industrial, civil, computer, or systems engineering. Some employers prefer you to have a master’s degree in your field. You need over five years of work experience in an engineering role, and you need a professional engineer (PE) license. As a management engineer, your duties and responsibilities revolve around project management tasks and keeping your team on target for development and production. You need strong leadership skills.
