What Is a Machine Tool Technology Instructor and How to Become One

As a machine tool technology instructor, you develop teaching materials covering various topics of machine tool technology, focusing on both classroom and laboratory instructional subjects. Your responsibilities include teaching college students how to set up machines and how to program, troubleshoot, and operate both manual and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), and more. You are expected to advise students and implement online and hybrid classes as well. Additional duties for some positions include developing new courses, continuing your professional development, and staying on top of new technology trends and changes.

The qualifications you need to become a machine tool technology instructor include an associate or bachelor’s degree in machine tool technology, industrial technology, CNC, or a related field and several years of professional experience as a Journey-level machinist, tool and die maker, or general machinist. Some employers prefer that you have at least five years of experience using machine tool technology equipment, as well as knowledge of HAAS or SIEMENS CNC operation. You should also know how to operate mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses. It is crucial that you have excellent communication skills and the ability to teach large groups effectively.
