What Is a Machine Operator and How to Become One

Machine operators are skilled in operating machinery, often specializing in one type of machinery or industry to become an expert. Machine operators also have a general skillset, knowing how to operate a wide range of industrial machinery. Since there are numerous industries and sectors that use a multitude of machinery, there is always room to learn more.

To become a machine operator, you must first pick your industry. Do you want to become a machine operator on a mining site? A construction site? Or in an office? In construction, machine operators are trained to work a variety of machines and can become specialists in working a crane or operating a forklift or tractor. In offices, they are the ones who can repair and troubleshoot large equipment for printing, or move toward paper or pulp mill equipment. Educational training classes are available for certain industries, but most machine operators learn by doing, participating in on-the-job training or apprenticeships. Certification is available for specific trades and can be explored once a machine operator becomes a subject matter expert with their chosen machine.

There are as many various types of machine operator jobs as there are industries. From private office machines to large mining machines, there is always a need for someone who knows how to operate, repair, and improve equipment. Construction and moving machine operators work with dredge operators to move water, conveyor belts to move goods, and derrick operators to move platforms and cables. Machine operator jobs are also found in the mining industry, digging and excavating for new tunnels or paths.

Job Summary

We are looking for a hard-working and reliable Machine Operator who is committed to quality and safety in the workplace. You will follow blueprints and schematic work-ups to create precision implements and tools with large machinery. After each product is cut through the machine, you will check it for quality and that it meets specifications. Safety is of the utmost importance, so you must follow company and industry safety guidelines at all times. We prefer candidates who have at least two years of experience in the manufacturing industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Read follow blueprints and sketch designs (including computer-aided design (CAD) and/or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files)
• Set-up, calibrate, maintain, and repair machinery and machine tools as needed
• Run test products to ensure quality and accuracy of production meets the set standard
• Oversee machines, belts, any moving pieces during the production process and adjust speed or movements as needed
• Finish pieces by grinding, smoothing or shaping as necessary
• Keep a daily activity log of production notes (including totals, defects, etc.)
• Follow state health and safety regulations by wearing required equipment and protection as needed

Requirements and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Training, certification, or degree from a technical college or vocational school preferred
• 2+ years of experience in a related manufacturing role
• Experience using CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software programs
• Able to read blueprints, sketches and/or computer-aided designs
• Must have some grinding and deburring experience
