A machine designer works to research, build, and maintain machines for a company. As a machine designer, your responsibilities are to use techniques and information gathered from the client to develop and design a machine that matches specifications. You collaborate with the mechanical assembler, electrical designer, and other team members to allow for efficient development. Your duties include drafting and drawing designs, adding details, creating lists of materials needed, and communicating directly with clients to ensure their satisfaction with the machinery. You also handle testing and troubleshooting and work to improve existing machines.

To become a machine designer, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related subject, although some employers care less about formal education and more about your experience. If you do pursue a degree, it’s recommended to focus on courses heavy in math, physics, and mechanical technology engineering. Internships and practical work offer a great experience to prepare you for this field. Other qualifications include hands-on experience with mechanical equipment and machinery, the ability to read blueprints, and general knowledge of the industry for which you create designs. You also need strong communication skills for working with other teams.
