What Is a Locksmith and How to Become One

Locksmiths are trained professionals who work with all kinds of locks, including doors, windows, safes, and cars. They install, repair, and adjust locks in automobiles, homes, and businesses. People locked out of their homes, businesses, or vehicles call locksmiths to undo the lock and open their doors. Other job duties include key cutting, replacing door and window locks for new homeowners, and installing and adjusting safes.

While formal education is not required to become a locksmith, most begin their careers with a training program. There are many courses offered at vocational schools and online that provide the basics of locksmithing, including key identification, key making, safe and vault locks, and electronic access locks. Obtaining an apprenticeship or training with a professional locksmith provides more hands-on experience in the trade. Many states require locksmiths to be licensed and may require completion of specific classes before you become eligible for licensing. Research the qualifications in the state where you wish to work.

A Certified Master Locksmith (CML) has earned the highest level of certification offered by the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). This certification shows the locksmith has demonstrated proficiency in nearly all areas of the Proficiency Registration Program and advanced knowledge in most areas of locksmithing and electronic security.

There are locksmithing schools and training programs are located all across the country, both in-person and online. Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) keeps a list of approved training programs, which is available on its website. These programs teach locksmithing students a variety of relevant skills, including key identification, lock installation, and high-security systems.

Job Summary

We have an immediate opening for a Locksmith. Your job duties will include installing, repairing, adjusting, and replacing locks and other door closures around various buildings and facilities; making duplicate keys when required; and managing the supply of keys for all staff, documenting when you issue keys and noting when they are returned. Our ideal candidate has completed an accredited locksmith program, is proficient in the techniques of the trade, and can use a variety of hand and power tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Duplicate keys and locks
• Install locks, both mechanical and electric
• Repair and maintain existing lock systems
• Keep accurate records of keys when they are distributed and returned

Requirements and Qualifications

• Relevant certificate from a vocational school or job training (preferred)
• Experience with a variety of lockpicking tools and key-cutting hardware
• Strong customer service skills
• Related experience in carpentry, preventative maintenance, or electrical work is a plus
