Live-In Companions live and work in a client’s home in order to better see to their care. Clients are usually seniors, people with disabilities or illnesses, or those with conditions which limit general self-care. As a Live-In Companion, you may make and serve meals, run errands, and assist with personal needs such as dressing and bathing. Besides daily chores, Live-In Companions also provide camaraderie; they may play cards, watch TV, or enjoy some other recreational games together. Each client is different and their needs may evolve. However, Live-In Companions can expect to do light housework, cook, and provide companionship.

To become a Live-In Companion, you need the skills to help with common household tasks, such as cleaning and cooking. You must also have the skills to provide general care for your client. You can start on this home-care career by earning a high school diploma. Since your duties include providing assistance in case of emergency, employers usually expect certification in CPR or basic lifesaving skills (BLS). You work in the client’s home, so you need a driver’s license or other means of transport. Your responsibilities may include lifting or positioning your client, so the qualifications for some companion jobs include physical strength and stamina.
