What Is a Linux System Engineer and How to Become One

As a Linux system engineer, your job duties include designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and monitoring programs created through the Linux system. You handle performance issues, ensure that the company has the proper network infrastructure, and develop new programs and tools for the company. You collaborate with team members to build applications that help others get the most out of the available infrastructure. A Linux system engineer also installs applications and uses software tools and IP network technologies to resolve issues and monitor program performance.

To become a Linux system engineer, you need a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or similar field. You must have experience with Unix/Linux operating systems and familiarity with the fundamentals of Linux scripting languages. You also need proficiency with MySQL, Bind, Puppet, Apache, and similar services and an understanding of load balancing and firewalls. Knowledge of open source application suites like WordPress is beneficial as well. Other skills include written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and analytical problem-solving.
