What Is a Label Machine Operator and How to Become One

As a label machine operator, your job is to operate labeler equipment, perform maintenance, and ensure the labeling process does not slow down production in a factory. The food industry frequently uses label makers because items like plastic jars and metal cans can't easily have labels printed on them. In this career, you weigh products, check to be sure products meet specifications, maintain records of label machine use and repairs, adjust equipment to ensure continued function, and perform setup tasks at scheduled times. Some factories work on a near-constant basis, so label machines may have little or no downtime except for maintenance needs. Accordingly, label machine operators may be asked to work nights or weekends.

The primary qualifications for a career as a label machine operator are attention to detail, mechanical repair skills, and a willingness to operate in a team environment. Employers prefer previous experience on a label line or using a forklift, but these are not necessary for consideration. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this position requires excellent communication skills, the ability to use knives and cleaning equipment, and the ability to rotate to other label lines or perform other labeling tasks as needed. Some machines require additional skills or expertise, such as knowledge of sealing or temperature control, and in rare cases, you may need additional training to operate such machines.
