Hydrostatic Testing Jobs - What Are They and How to Get One

Hydrostatic testing involves using water to pressurize oil and gas pipelines, sprinkler systems, plumbing and tanks, sewer systems, and similar structures to test for leaks and assess structural integrity. Jobs in hydrostatic testing include working as a pipefitter or inspector, but you can also become a technician or an operator. In these roles, your duties include calibrating and performing pressure tests, inspecting and repairing lines and systems, and assisting with routine maintenance. Additionally, these jobs have responsibilities related to safety compliance, reporting defective parts and equipment, and working from both written and oral instructions, so good communication skills and the ability to pay attention to detail are important.

Hydrostatic testing jobs are available in a variety of industries, such as construction, oil and gas, utilities and power distribution, emergency services, and agriculture. To land a hydrostatic testing job, you need to be able to operate and inspect temperature and pressure gauges and charts. For most positions, you need a high school diploma, and you must be able to pass a background check. Some roles prefer candidates with qualifications related to driving a forklift, operating a crane, or using pneumatic hand tools. Candidates should be proficient in English. For jobs in the oil or gas industry, you need experience working with oil field equipment.
