What Is a Hers Rater and How to Become One

As a HERS rater, your duties are to inspect and audit homes according to the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) to determine how energy efficient the house is. In this career, you often work with local building departments to help them obtain proper documentation or CF-3R forms for final approval of their projects. Your responsibilities center around the use of a rating system, which you use to verify the rate at which a building uses energy. HERS raters primarily work with the California Energy Commission to ensure new structures meet compliance standards. There may be similar positions throughout the country.

The qualifications you need to become a HERS rater include certification from an accredited Rating Provider, which allows you to inspect and test homes. You must pass the National Rater Core exam, complete a home energy rating, and fully understand chapter two of RESNET standards. Part of your training includes performing three to five evaluations under the supervision of a certified rating provider. Important qualifications include analytical skills, an understanding of building science, and familiarity with energy modeling software. Each year, you must take a specified number of education credits to obtain recertification.
