As a freelance SQL server database administrator (freelance SQL DBA), your duties are to provide database services to a company or organization on a contract or freelance basis. You work on databases that use Structured Query Language, or SQL. As an independent database administrator, you analyze a client’s needs, configure the database, and create or install applications and software for data acquisition and database queries. You test new code and systems to ensure functionality, and your responsibilities may include training staff to access data via applications.

The qualifications you need to become a freelance SQL server DBA include a relevant degree, computer skills, and the ability to analyze a client’s needs and organize a plan to meet those needs. You typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems management, or IT. Microsoft offers SQL server training and database administrator certification at the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate level. Most clients prefer to hire database administrators with a portfolio of past work, so you should take care to document all your work, even at the student level, in order to have a better presence with which to attract clients.
