What Is a FoxPro Developer and How to Become One

A FoxPro developer is responsible for maintaining the functionality of legacy software applications that rely on the discontinued Microsoft FoxPro programming language. Although both FoxPro and the updated Visual FoxPro (VFP) are deprecated, both programming languages are still in use, primarily in the medical industry. As a FoxPro developer, your job duties are to write testable, efficient code, implement best practices in software development, support database manipulation and the download of information, use documented designs to write computer codes, and execute deployment scripts. Your responsibilities include the re-development of software applications using non-deprecated programming languages.

The qualifications for becoming a Visual FoxPro developer are a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of programming experience. Many employers prefer you to have an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in computer science or programming. You need strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn and implement different computer programming languages for the development or re-development of legacy software applications. Your responsibilities range from updating and patching sunset software to rewriting old code and implementing new software tools to improving the functionality of business applications.
