What Is a Fire Inspector and How to Become One

A fire inspector is responsible for inspecting existing and new buildings to ensure that they are up to code and do not present any fire hazards. It is a fire inspector’s job to test and examine fire prevention measures, such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and evacuation plans. A large company may perform a fire safety drill for the inspector to oversee and provide feedback. For new building projects, a fire inspector supervises and approves fire prevention measures to ensure they meet state regulations. The job of fire inspector should not be confused with that of fire investigator. An investigator examines extinguished fires to find the source. An inspector examines buildings to prevent a fire from starting.

The minimum education requirement to work as a fire inspector is a high school diploma. Most fire inspectors have experience working as firefighters and have post-secondary degrees and certifications related to that work. To work as a fire inspector, you will have to fulfill the training requirements in your state. Typically this training is a combination of classroom and practical work, covering topics such as building safety codes, proper handling of hazardous materials, and fire alarm installation and inspection. You will need to be certified by the National Fire Protection Association and may complete additional training.

Job Summary

The role of the Fire Inspector will be to perform fire inspections, provide fire safety education and fire prevention services to the public, and investigate fires. The Fire Inspector will ensure that all buildings, structures, and premises are in compliance with applicable fire codes and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings and structures for fire hazards and ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations
• Investigate fire incidents to determine causes, assess liability, and recommend corrective measures
• Provide fire safety education and fire prevention services to the public
• Prepare detailed reports on inspections and fire investigations
• Respond to emergency calls and provide assistance as needed
• Participate in fire drills and exercises
• Maintain records of all inspections, investigations, and other activities

Requirements and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver’s license
• Previous experience in firefighting and fire safety preferred
• Knowledge of fire codes and regulations
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Able to work independently and maintain a high level of professionalism
• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
• Able to lift and carry heavy equipment
• Able to work in extreme conditions
