What Is a Field Engineer and How to Become One

As a field engineer, your main responsibilities include the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of equipment, machinery, or facilities in a number of industries. Field engineers can work in the construction, telecommunication, energy, oil and gas, and manufacturing industries, to name just a few. Your specific duties depend on the field in which you work, but you typically must travel to a work site to inspect it before they install a machine or piece of equipment and travel whenever equipment is experiencing technical issues.

To become a field engineer, you typically need an associate or bachelor’s degree, but extensive job experience can make up for lack of formal qualifications. Your degree should be specific to the industry in which you work. For example, if you are a field engineer for a chemical production plant, a degree in chemical engineering is necessary. A telecom field engineer may need a degree in information technology. In addition to these qualifications, you need to have good computer literacy, strong analytical thinking, and excellent communication skills to fulfill your duties and responsibilities.

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Field Engineer to join our team. The Field Engineer will provide technical support and maintenance services for our client's computer systems and networks. This individual will also identify and resolve customer issues quickly and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Install, configure and maintain computer systems, networking equipment, and related hardware and software
• Troubleshoot and diagnose hardware, software, and network issues
• Ensure the proper functioning of computer systems and networks
• Provide technical support to customers in person, over the phone, or via remote access
• Develop and document technical procedures and processes
• Monitor system performance and security
• Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• 3+ years of experience in a similar role
• Expertise in hardware and software systems
• Knowledge of computer networks and network security
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Able to work independently and in a team environment
