What Does a Fiber Design Engineer Do?
A fiber design engineer, also known as an outside plant engineer (OSP), is a telecommunications engineer who designs optic cable systems. Your responsibilities include fiber design and its allocation, developing route maps for cable and assessing the terrain through which your cabling must pass, creating budgets for projects, determining the types of materials necessary to complete orders, and ensuring you have the right inventory for each project. Your designs and analyses are then passed off to a contractor or project manager who implements your designs.
How to Become a Fiber Design Engineer
To become a fiber design engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in civil or optical engineering. In addition to your educational qualifications, you must have several years of experience with both inside and outside plant operations and a background in construction or project management. You must be able to work outside and perform significant amounts of travel since your primary duties include surveying land, determining what types of cable boxes and aerial systems are needed, and assessing property rights along the project route.
What Skills Make for a Successful Fiber Design Engineer?
A fiber design engineer needs a mix of technical design, construction, and civil engineering skills and training to be successful. As an optical engineer, you must understand the principles of fiber optic cabling and networking and how to efficiently place cabling to meet your project goals. As a civil engineer and construction specialist, you must be able to assess the physical landscape and determine how your cable designs can best be implemented. You also need project management and leadership qualities as well as strong communication skills.
