Entry-level coding jobs are available in software development and the medical industry. While they share a title, they are completely different careers. In regards to software development, your responsibilities in this career include writing codes for computer programs, assisting with trial runs, documenting results from these tests, and translating program outcomes into improvements for your code. As an entry-level coder in the health care world, your duties involve following billing procedures, reviewing medical records for accuracy and completion, communicating with insurance companies, gathering information from patients, and ensuring that you use the proper diagnosis codes in medical records.

To become an entry-level coder in the medical industry, you need a high school diploma. An associate degree can be beneficial, but it is not a requirement. In addition to educational qualifications, you must be a certified coder. Certifications are available as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CSS), or a Certified Medical Coder (CMC) through accredited programs. You complete most of your training on-the-job, as the skills you need are specific to your employer’s software and applications. Experience in the medical field is preferred, and knowledge of health care terminology is required. You must also be up to date on the current International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes.

To become an entry-level coder in software development, you need a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer programming, or a similar field. Internships can help give you the hands-on experience you need, but they are not necessary. At the entry-level, a strong foundation in software programming is enough. Online boot camps to become a programmer and software developer can provide you with further qualifications. Other essential skills include an understanding of implementation lifecycle for computer programs, proficiency with Microsoft Office, an analytical mind, and knowledge of programming languages.
