What Is an Elementary Math Tutor and How to Become One

As an elementary math tutor, your job is to teach students basic math skills. This is usually done individually or in small groups so you can give each student the extra care and instruction they need. Tutoring may occur at school, at home, or in a dedicated tutoring facility. Most elementary math tutors work with young children, but you may occasionally teach immigrants and visitors who did not learn math while growing up. In this career, you create personalized progress reports and conduct developmentally appropriate games and activities.

The primary qualifications for a career as an elementary math tutor are a high school diploma and experience working with children or immigrants. In some areas, you may need an associate degree or equivalent education. Elementary math tutors occasionally work with linguistically diverse students, so experience with a second language common in your area is beneficial. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this position requires proficiency in math, strong communication skills, and patience. You must also be able to use office software, operate in a fast-paced environment, and quickly change the tactics of your lesson to adjust for varying skill levels.
