What Is a Design Checker and How to Become One

As a design checker, you are responsible for examining the engineering drawings of parts, assemblies, and installations to ensure accuracy and completeness. You have interpretation duties to detect any errors or discrepancies within these 3D design documents. Your responsibilities require you to annotate any changes that need to be made and communicate with others how to pursue a better design for manufacturability. You consult for angles, dimensions, bend allowances, and tolerances to avoid mistakes during and after development. You also determine material and tool selection using your knowledge of drafting and manufacturing methods.

The educational qualifications to become a design checker include an associate or bachelor's degree. The most common majors include drafting and design, mechanical engineering, or similar fields. Several years of experience in mechanical drafting using SolidWorks and Auto CAD software is often required. If you want to work in the aerospace industry, obtaining the right security clearance is usually necessary to fulfill employer requirements. It’s also essential to develop strong math, mechanical, listening, and problem-solving skills to succeed in this job.
