What Is a Computer Graphic Designer?

A computer graphic designer specializes in designing graphics for digital applications, such as interactive websites, or uses computer software to create images or visuals for print or digital purposes. Their primary duties are to collaborate with the art department or directly with clients to determine the scope and purpose of the project, then design the visual components to specifications using design software, such as InDesign or Photoshop. Some graphic designers also create videos or animations.

How to Become a Computer Graphic Designer

There are no formal education requirements to become a computer graphic designer, but degree programs in graphic design, digital media, or closely related programs provide you with hands-on experience with design programs. Practice using these programs to create a variety of web designs and images to build a substantial portfolio. You also need to be creative, have an eye for detail, and be able to communicate with clients to determine what they want in their designs. Once you are confident in your portfolio, seek computer graphic designer positions in design firms or large companies that have graphic designers on staff.
