What Does a Compressor Station Operator Do?

A compressor station operator, also referred to as a gas compressor operator or gas pumping station operator, operates compressor engines involved in the compression and processing of natural gas. In this career, you perform maintenance on the compressor engine, ensuring each pump and valve is running correctly. Your duties include conducting an inspection of the compressor on a routine basis and maintaining detailed records of your work. You work in the energy industry and are responsible for the effective flow of natural gas. Other responsibilities include conducting housekeeping on dehydration systems and plant support systems.

How to Become a Compressor Station Operator

There are several qualifications for becoming a compressor station operator. Regarding education, you need at minimum an associate degree in an industrial or mechanical field. You may also need experience as a mechanical or industrial engineer. You need experience working in compression, dehydration, and transportation of natural gas, and should understand the gas pipeline related to DOT and OSHA regulations. Compressor station operators need strong electrical skills and should be proficient with computers and human relations. It is beneficial if you have experience using Caterpiller or other reciprocating natural gas engines.

Where Do Compressor Station Operators Work?

Compressor station operators typically work for energy companies. You spend most of your time in the field, directly servicing compressor engines or pumping stations. However, significant time may also be spent in an office, monitoring the compressor’s performance and pressure. Compressor station operation jobs are most readily available in areas of the country where they use natural gas. Many compressor station operator jobs are available in the Midwest, in states like North Dakota or Ohio. You must be comfortable getting your hands dirty, as much of this job is conducted outside or in industrial areas.
