What Is a Checker and How to Become One

A checker or cashier rings up groceries and other goods at a retail store. In this career, your job duties include totaling the price of all goods for a customer, collecting payment for the items, and assisting the customer with the bagging of their purchases. In most positions, you must give a report of the day’s transactions to management. There are no firm educational qualifications needed for a career as a checker. Some employers prefer to hire checkers with previous cashier and cash handling experience. However, there are plenty of entry-level positions available. To be a good checker, you need excellent customer service skills a firm grasp of basic mathematics.

The qualifications you need for a checker job often include a high school diploma, customer service skills, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods. The job duties of a checker or retail cashier are to operate the cash register, check out merchandise using a point of sale (POS) system, and take payment from customers in the form of cash, credit, check, or mobile payments. Depending on the size and setup of the store, the responsibilities of a checker may also include processing merchandise returns or exchanges.
