An application operations engineer helps to design, implement, and update applications that support or improve business operations. Your responsibilities are to create custom features for company systems, deploy new tools and software, monitor and analyze issues of efficiency, and develop ways to address those problems so that the organization can function better. Other duties include troubleshooting technical problems, maintaining databases, and providing individual solutions for users. You typically work as part of a large team of developers and engineers.

To become an application operations engineer, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with excellent programming skills. You should have a background in internal product development and be comfortable working as part of a large team of engineers, developers, and programmers. Additional qualifications include knowledge of various computing and database languages, such as SQL, as well as familiarity with proprietary business software, such as JD Edwards and Oracle.

The skills you need to be a successful application operations engineer include technical and analytical problem-solving abilities, as well as familiarity with a wide range of computing practices, such as development tools and workflow management methods like Agile Scrum. You must also be able to manage security protocols for protecting privacy and adequately document all of your work.
