Reports To: Elementary School Director

Grade: Salary Schedule per CBA

Terms of employment: This is a full-time position with 20 periods of 50 minutes plus no less than 80 min in recess supervision in accordance with the Elementary School schedule. Full-time may include Educational projects, department responsibilities, and travel between campuses.

Rochambeau, The French International School ("Rochambeau"), located in Bethesda, MD is an independent and coeducational day school, offering a unique combination of the French curriculum and a high-quality English program, to approximately 1,100 students from Preschool (2-years old) through 12th grade. Job Summary:

Each teacher is responsible for all aspects of teaching and learning for those classes and students assigned to him/her. This involves the organization and administration of the classes, the preparation of lesson plans and teaching within the school guidelines. Each member of staff has a responsibility to promote high-quality standards throughout his/her work, in particular, to maintain high standards of achievement and to encourage all students to fulfill their potential through effective teaching and high expectations.

Main responsibilities:

  • Teach students of diverse abilities in English Language Arts and Social Sciences.
  • Contribute to the development of the ELA curriculum, instructional materials, assessment tools, and lesson plans according to the needs of students of differing ages, levels, and abilities ranging from beginning English-language learning to advanced proficiency in English.
  • Use technology as a learning tool in the classroom and with the students.
  • Select and order textbooks and instructional materials for use in the classroom in collaboration with the English department.
  • Monitor and assess individual student performance throughout the year in order to determine each student's current English level placement, maintain records for individual students, and prepare report cards each trimester.
  • Manage student behavior in a positive manner for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Attend pedagogical planning meetings as needed.
  • Participate in ELA department meetings and work collaboratively on department projects.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service programs or other professional development.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences as required or requested.
  • Perform supervisory duties other than lunch/lunch recess duty according to the duty roster, not to exceed the average agreed upon for all elementary school teachers at or before the first teachers' meeting of each school year.
  • Act as a liaison between students, parents, and school staff as regards the Elementary School English program.
  • Stay abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools.
  • Maintain a professional manner when interacting with students, parents, community agencies and colleagues.
  • Perform other duties assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • BA or BS degree in Elementary school teaching from an accredited university or college is essential.
  • Experience in teaching English to Second Language Learners or Bilingual Education is preferred.
  • Elementary teaching experience is preferred.
  • An understanding of French is preferred but not essential.

  • Have proven experience in teaching the relevant age group.
  • Well developed and effective communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Skills in building an equitable classroom community.

  • Ability to use innovative, active teaching methods.
  • Positively support the school's mission, policies, and practices and work collaboratively in a professional organization.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of information.
