Summary/objective
The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient. The Medical Assistant (MA) will be responsible for performing both administrative and clinical skills in the Orchard Hospital Medical Specialty Center environment. The MA will perform all patient care duties under the direction of a physician. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for becoming familiar with not only Orchard Hospital policies & procedures, but also MSC policies and procedures.
Essential functions
  • Front desk, reception when the receptionist is unavailable.
  • Answering the phones and scheduling appointments.
  • Great patients, assure completion of registration forms, and give instructions.
  • Filling and maintaining medical records.
  • Preparing and typing correspondence.
  • Processing, coding, and completing insurance claim forms.
  • Processing mail.
  • Ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment.
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and outside referrals for the physician.
  • Calling a prescription to the pharmacy for the physicians.
  • Performing computer tasks for physicians such as Allscripts, LabCorp, and LAbDAQ.
  • Communication skills using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Following appropriate illegal, ethical and professional conduct.
  • Following appropriate legal, ethical and professional conduct.
  • Participates in quality assurance and procedure improvements.
  • Attends staff meetings as required.
  • Listen to voice mail a minimum of twice each shift and returns patient phone calls on a daily basis. Maintain a log of all phone calls received and returned.
  • Check Orchard Hospital e-mail a minimum of once of each shift and respond appropriately.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs, including pain level.
  • Performing EKG's (after additional training) when necessary and ordered by a physician.
  • Recording patient interview, history and chief complaint.
  • Prepare patient for examinations and by performing routine screening tests.
  • Assisting the physicians with exams and minor office procedures.
  • The collection of lab specimens.
  • Performing simple laboratory tests within the scope of practice.
  • Change dressings, applying bandages and other first aid procedures.
  • Assist physicians with patient teaching as it is appropriate.

  • Ability to understand patient needs.
  • Practicing OSHA safety standards.
  • Performing accurate, legal, and ethical documentation of all patient care activities at times.

  • Maintain the strictest confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.

Physical demands
  • Be able to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time.
  • Be able to answer more than 20 phone calls a day and provide the information.

Travel required.
Gcallouts could be asked to go to the Oroville location once completed 90 day probation.
Required education and experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program which identifies both clinical and classroom instruction sufficient to meet state requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services; this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Two years' experience preferred but not required.
  • Certificate of certified credentials from an approved Medical Assistant program.

Preferred education and experience
  • Current health provider BLS card.
  • 2+ years of experience in a medical office.
  • Experience with EMR (electronic medical records), medical terminology.
  • Previous experience in a specific medical field preferred.
