About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What skills or qualities help someone succeed as a Hair Stylist?

A: To succeed as a Hair Stylist, key technical skills include proficiency in various cutting and coloring techniques, knowledge of hair texture and type, and familiarity with sanitation and safety protocols. Soft skills such as excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to build strong relationships with clients are also crucial, as they enable stylists to understand client preferences and deliver personalized services. By combining these technical and interpersonal skills, Hair Stylists can provide exceptional client experiences, drive business growth, and advance their careers through continued education and professional development.

Q: What is the career path for a Hair Stylist?

A: A Hair Stylist's typical career progression involves starting as a junior stylist, assisting senior stylists and learning techniques, then advancing to a senior stylist role, where they develop their own client base and expertise. Mid-level roles, such as a stylist team leader or educator, provide opportunities for skill development in areas like business management, teaching, and product knowledge, while senior roles, like a salon manager or artistic director, focus on leadership, creativity, and business growth. Long-term, Hair Stylists may pursue opportunities in education, product development, or entrepreneurship, or transition into related fields like makeup artistry, barbering, or beauty industry management.
