Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are part of the Department of Early College and Career Education (ECCE) within the Office of Career and College Success (OCCS). CTE programs for CPS high schools serve 15K students across 70 schools with the goal of enhancing student preparation for college and career success, as evidenced by increasing graduation rates, college enrollment rates, employment rates, and earning levels of CPS CTE students.

Job Summary: 

Under the direction of the building administrator of the assigned program, the CTE Classroom Tutor - Part-Time/Temporary will assist students as they learn academic, technical, and employability skills in the CTE classroom and lab spaces. Tutors will meet with students privately or in a group setting to oversee the completion of CTE assignments, work with students to improve technical skills, and further elaborate on concepts learned in the classroom or lab space. Tutors aim to assist students and promote a deeper understanding of course materials while maintaining a safe learning environment that fosters student achievement.

The CTE Classroom Tutor - Part-Time/Temporary will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Tutor students individually or in group sessions to review CTE content, practice technical skills, and review for assessment/certifications;
  • Work with students to understand key concepts specific to the industry of their CTE pathway;
  • Maintain communication with the CTE teacher to update them on the student's progress;
  • Conduct practice skills assessments to track progress, identify areas of improvement, and help set goals for success;
  • Providing students positive and constructive feedback;
  • Building meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds;
  • Diagnose student needs through active listening techniques and questioning strategies; and
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the CTE Classroom Tutor - Part-Time/Temporary must possess the following qualifications: 

Education Required: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent  

Experience Required: 

  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience; 
  • Previous experience working with youth is preferred; and
  • Previous experience in CTE or CTE pathway industry is preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, a basic understanding of mathematics, and knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations;
  • Passion and excitement for the CTE content being taught;
  • Ability to work with and for school-aged children, to follow written and oral instructions, to operate basic office equipment, and to communicate effectively with the public;
  • Good oral and written communication skills, good reading skills, skills in operating audio-visual equipment and personal computers; and
  • Knowledge of CTE-relevant skills in the CTE content area in which the candidate will be placed.

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters. Unvaccinated staff with an approved exemption must submit to weekly testing.
