Steward Job Summary
The steward will be responsible for tending to customers' needs such as welcoming patrons, seat them at tables or in the lounge, and help ensure the quality of facilities and service. This role requires a friendly, personable, informative, and professional attitude. The steward will represent the restaurant and provide guests with clean eating areas, polite assistance, and orderly setting. Must be motivated to excel at customer service, and alert to all guest needs.
Steward Duties and Responsibilities
Greeting patrons, and if needed, confirming and taking reservations
Escorting guests to tables
Answering phone calls and giving basic information on reservations, availability, restaurant hours and services
Preparing for guests by cleaning and setting tables
Setting up any seasonal decorations, candles, or table cloths
Assisting guests by providing menus; keeping menus clean and presentable
Serving water to guests and refilling beverage glasses as needed
Placing and replacing silverware as needed
Delivering beverages from the bartender
Stocking wait staff serving stations with napkins, utensils, trays, condiments, and salt and pepper containers
Directing guests to restrooms or exits as needed
Clearing table as guests complete their meals and preparing tables for next guests
Following and maintaining all sanitation and safety procedures
Assists in cleaning, opening/closing tasks, and other duties as needed
Additional duties may include assisting kitchen staff with preparing salads, appetizers, or desserts; adding garnishes or decorations to food
Steward Requirements and Qualifications
Able to move and clean quickly in a fast-paced environment
Friendly âpeople-personâ; polite and courteous to all patrons
Patient and helpful when assisting customers
Able to quickly write or memorize complex or multiple orders for large parties or on the phone
Works well as part of a team and on individual tasks
Excellent at verbal and written communication
Works well and efficiently under pressure
High school degree or equivalent; or relevant work experience
Legally able to serve alcohol
Able to work nights, weekends, and occasional holidays
Physically able to wipe down table tops, chairs, and booths; able to pick up debris from the floor; able to carry 25 or more pounds; able to push vacuum or mop
Physically able to stand and move during the length of shift; able to bend and kneel through shift
Must pass a criminal background check
Able to read, write, and perform basic mathematics
