The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Physical Health & Wellness program helps warriors and their family members feel better, gain confidence, and live healthier lives. We tackle common issues like sleep, pain, and stress through our programming, empowering them to learn and practice healthy habits that promote long-term wellness.
The Physical Health & Wellness Intern will assist with day-to-day functions and provide support to WWP Program teams including Physical Health & Wellness, Adaptive Sports and Soldier Ride. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization by assisting with administrative tasks, learning and developing motivational interviewing skills needed for effective coaching, assisting with the creation of engaging presentations and reports, and participating in programmatic events. The intern will gain valuable insight into multiple WWP programs and directorates through cross-functional collaboration and direct engagement with several teams.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the PH&W team with day-to-day program operations and administrative tasks.

  • Attend team meetings and contribute ideas to enhance programming and participant experience.

  • Review existing program content and provide areas of feedback to strengthen participant engagement.

  • Support and observe the planning, coordination, and creation of wellness programs and events.

  • Participate in and observe programmatic events to gain further knowledge of program delivery.

  • Engage directly with multiple programs and directorates within Wounded Warrior Project, learning their functions, services, and interdependencies.

  • Learn and observe motivational interviewing skills from PH&W Coaches by studying their application of skills in individual coaching sessions and provide a summary of learning to supervisor.

  • Conduct research on health and wellness topics to support program development and provide feedback to current programs and presentations.

  • Research and evaluate opportunities to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into health and wellness programs and coaching services to enhance effectiveness, personalization, and operational efficiency.

  • Assist in presentations on health and wellness topics to build public speaking skills and support program education efforts.

  • Learn and participate in other events or tasks as applicable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

EXPERIENCE

Requirements

  • Coursework, volunteer, or work experience in exercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, human performance, public health, or a similar health science field.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

Preferences

  • Experience with individual and/or group coaching at any level.

  • Experience volunteering with a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

EDUCATION

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college.

  • Pursuing a degree inexercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, human performance, public health or similar health science field.
