Founded and headed by Gary Barnett, Extell Development Company is a nationally acclaimed real estate developer of residential, office, retail and hospitality properties, operating primarily in Manhattan and other premier cities across the nation. Experiencing outstanding growth since its founding in 1989, the company’s growing portfolio exceeds twenty-five million square feet.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Working in collaboration with the Development and Construction departments, the Vice President, Design manages the design process for active development projects and coordinates the activities of the department as it relates to design execution.  The Vice President, Design interacts with various design consultants, contractors, procurement agents, and third-party vendors on a day-to-day basis.  With an emphasis on interior design scope, this individual works directly with and manages the expectations of the Founder and Chairman as it relates to project's design intent implementation. Jointly with other Vice Presidents of Design, the role oversees manages and provide guidance to the in-house design team in the execution of their work.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously
  • Participates in the selection of interior designers, architects, and other related design consultants
  • Review of design scope of work during consultants’ contract negotiation phase
  • Works closely and collaboratively with other departments through all stages of design
  • Collaborates with Development and Marketing teams to establish design direction and project protocols throughout the design process.
  • Collaborates with Construction team to implement design intent inclusive of: overseeing the construction administration phase, conducting field visits, participating in weekly coordination efforts, ensuring design details for buildability, vetting materiality for quality, and leading value engineering efforts as needed
  • Works with the Sales, Marketing, and Development teams to develop sales center layout plans, model units, and hotel mock-up rooms
  • Manages design consultants and their review of deliverables at each phase of the design process, including floor plans, kitchen/ bathroom designs, public spaces, amenities, and F&B layouts for residential or hospitality projects
  • Oversees Submittal/RFI/ Shop drawing process to ensure implementation of approved design intent
  • Collaborates with internal team to provide overall project schedule.
  • Oversees selection of art and FFE as it relates to project budget.
  • Quality control vetting and selection of source facilities and suppliers
  • Participates in the construction bidding process
  • Reviews design aspects of marketing materials
  • Oversees FF&E procurement and installation processes

  • Ability to work independently and within a team to build relationships and interact effectively to complete tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to present recommendations and interact with management and investment partners

Education /Experience Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or interior design, required, master’s degree in architecture or interior design preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in architecture or interior design, and a background in real estate development/ground-up construction preferred.
  • Knowledge/experience of multifamily/high-end luxury design preferred.
  • Knowledge of general workflow of construction processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam, and Autodesk AutoCAD; 3D modeling preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Office environment with the usual office equipment and minimal noise level
  • Construction sites with usual equipment and noise
