What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VMware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VMware Engineer, you need a solid understanding of virtualization concepts, networking, and server infrastructure, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field and relevant VMware certifications (like VCP). Proficiency with VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and tools such as PowerCLI or other automation platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure reliable virtual environments, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration with IT teams.

What Does a VMware Engineer Do?

A VMware engineer is a technical computer professional who uses virtualization software from VMware to complete their job duties. This software allows you to virtualize Windows servers and connect them to your network or the cloud. In this virtual environment, the server is not a separate physical machine, and the VMware platform lets you logically define multiple virtual servers on a single host machine. The qualifications for a career as a VMware engineer include a computer science degree and skills certification from VMware.

What are some common challenges faced by VMware Engineers when managing large-scale virtual environments?

VMware Engineers often encounter challenges such as resource contention, maintaining high availability, and ensuring security compliance across numerous virtual machines. Managing and optimizing performance while minimizing downtime can be complex, especially as environments grow. Additionally, keeping up with software updates, patches, and integrating new technologies requires continuous learning and effective collaboration with network, storage, and security teams.

What are VMware Engineers?

VMware Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing virtualization solutions using VMware technologies. They are responsible for creating and maintaining virtual environments, optimizing system performance, and ensuring high availability of virtual machines. VMware Engineers often work with vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and other VMware products to support business needs, troubleshoot issues, and enhance infrastructure scalability and security.

Job description

Salary $113K-$115K

Location: Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD (Onsite)
Program: Mission systems supporting DCGS

Zapata Technology is looking for System Administrator who enjoys building, tuning, and stabilizing complex virtual environments that directly support real-world missions.

This is not a ticket-taking helpdesk role.

This is a hands-on position for someone who understands how virtualization, storage, networking, operating systems, automation, and cloud all connect โ€” and wants to own the environment end-to-end.

Youโ€™ll be the person the team relies on when performance is off, clusters need to scale, templates need to be rebuilt the right way, or hybrid connectivity needs to work the first time.

If you like solving deep infrastructure problems, improving environments, and working in a place where your technical decisions matter, this role is for you.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doing

  • Designing, building, and optimizing VMware clusters for performance and resilience
  • Owning vCenter health, capacity planning, and performance tuning
  • Troubleshooting real performance issues (CPU Ready, ballooning, storage latency, network bottlenecks)
  • Building and maintaining gold images, templates, and standardized deployments
  • Working across storage, networking, Windows, Linux, and virtualization as one integrated system
  • Helping evolve the environment toward automation and Infrastructure as Code
  • Supporting hybrid connectivity and VMware Cloud integrations
  • Improving how the team deploys, scales, and manages infrastructure
  • Acting as a technical leader and mentor for junior admins

What You Should Be Strong In

  • VMware vSphere / ESXi / vCenter in enterprise environments
  • Virtual networking (vSwitches, distributed switches, VLANs)
  • Storage (iSCSI, NFS, FC, datastores, latency troubleshooting)
  • Performance troubleshooting using VMware tools and logs
  • Windows and Linux server administration
  • Understanding how virtualization supports containers, DevOps, and modern apps
  • Working knowledge of routing, switching, firewalls, DNS, DHCP

Big Plus If You Have Experience With

  • VMware Cloud, Azure, or AWS integrations
  • HCX, cross-environment vMotion, or workload migrations
  • Terraform, Ansible, or other automation tools
  • Enterprise backup/DR and monitoring platforms

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 5+ years of VMware infrastructure experience in enterprise environments
  • Someone who enjoys solving hard infrastructure problems
  • Someone who wants to improve environments, not just maintain them
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience)

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full time position

Work environment will be on site in an office setting working with general office equipment.

Clearance Type:

  • Requires an active TS/SCI.
