What is a virtual product manager?

Virtual Product Managers are professionals who oversee the development and lifecycle of digital products while working remotely, often coordinating teams and stakeholders from different locations. They are responsible for defining product strategies, gathering requirements, prioritizing features, and ensuring successful product launches. Virtual Product Managers use digital tools to collaborate effectively, manage workflows, and maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams. Their role is critical in today's increasingly remote and distributed work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual product manager?

To thrive as a Virtual Product Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, market analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Agile methodologies, and product analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is typically required. Strong communication, leadership, and remote collaboration skills help drive cross-functional teams and maintain alignment across digital channels. These skills ensure effective product development, clear stakeholder engagement, and successful outcomes in a remote work environment.

How do virtual product managers typically collaborate with remote and cross-functional teams?

Virtual Product Managers often work with distributed teams that may span different time zones and disciplines, such as engineering, design, and marketing. Effective collaboration relies on regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and the use of project management tools to keep everyone aligned. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels are crucial to ensure that priorities are understood and progress stays on track. Adapting to various communication styles and being proactive in resolving misunderstandings can help Virtual Product Managers foster a productive remote team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the development, enhancement, and lifecycle of assigned tax product capabilities, ensuring alignment with customer needs, regulatory requirements, and business objectives.
  • Partner with one or more Scrum teams to apply Agile practices, participate in product and sprint planning activities, and help ensure delivery remains aligned with customer and business outcomes.
  • Conduct product discovery activities, including customer interviews, market research, competitive analysis, and Voice of Customer (VOC) programs to identify opportunities and validate product-market fit.

  • Monitor product adoption, customer satisfaction, retention, migration, and usage metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and portfolio growth.
  • Track regulatory and industry changes, assessing impacts and partnering with stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of compliance-related enhancements.
  • Prepare and communicate product plans, priorities, roadmap updates, migration progress, and business outcomes to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Leverage AI and agentic tools to accelerate customer research, competitive analysis, documentation, experimentation, and product discovery activities.
  • Utilize AI to support product planning, prioritization, research synthesis, market analysis, and content generation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in Product Management, Product Ownership, Business Analysis, or a related software product role.
  • Ability to gather customer feedback, analyze business needs, and translate insights into product requirements and roadmap priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to leverage data and customer insights to support decision-making.
  • Ability to manage product backlogs, defining user stories, and prioritizing competing customer and business needs.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Customer-centric mindset with a passion for understanding user workflows and delivering solutions that drive customer value and business outcomes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a fast-paced, Agile environment.

Understanding of AI and generative AI concepts with the ability to leverage AI across discovery, experimentation, planning, and execution activities.
