Is VBA still used in 2026?

VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) remains in use for automating tasks in Microsoft Office applications, especially in legacy systems and industries with extensive Excel-based workflows. While newer automation tools and languages are gaining popularity, VBA continues to be relevant for maintaining existing solutions and for roles requiring Excel automation skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VBA Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VBA Developer, you need strong programming skills in Visual Basic for Applications, solid understanding of Excel, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, version control systems, and knowledge of database connectivity (such as SQL) are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help VBA Developers collaborate with stakeholders and efficiently address business needs. These skills ensure that automation solutions are robust, user-friendly, and aligned with organizational objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by VBA Developers when working with legacy Excel applications?

VBA Developers often encounter challenges such as poorly documented code, lack of version control, and outdated Excel features when working with legacy applications. These issues can make it difficult to understand existing logic, troubleshoot bugs, and implement new features efficiently. Collaborating closely with business users and maintaining clear documentation are important strategies to overcome these obstacles and ensure smooth upgrades or maintenance.

Is VBA still in demand?

VBA Developer roles remain in demand for automating tasks in Excel, Access, and other Microsoft Office applications, especially in finance, accounting, and data analysis sectors. While newer automation tools are emerging, VBA skills are still valuable for maintaining legacy systems and improving efficiency in many organizations.

What are VBA Developers?

VBA Developers are specialized programmers who use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a scripting language primarily used to automate tasks and enhance functionality within Microsoft Office applications like Excel, Access, and Word. They create macros, develop custom forms, and integrate data processes to streamline workflow and improve productivity. VBA Developers often work with businesses to solve repetitive task challenges, automate data analysis, and build user-friendly solutions tailored to organizational needs.

What Is a VBA Developer?

A VBA developer works with Microsoft tools like Visual Basic for Applications to code new programming for Office and other software. Your duties include creating application enhancements, creating systems administration tools, providing maintenance for programs, and creating new programs for business development. Your work is connected to all moments in the life cycle development of software. Additionally, your job is to assist with quality assurance and the testing of new products and to provide analysis and reports for management and other development teams. You are also responsible for documentation and ensuring that your team meets the specifications for each project.

How much do VBA developers make?

VBA developers typically earn between $50,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Those with advanced skills in automation, data analysis, and familiarity with Excel and Access can command higher salaries, especially in corporate environments or financial sectors.

Is Python or VBA better?

For a VBA Developer, VBA is essential for automating tasks within Microsoft Office applications like Excel and Access, while Python offers broader capabilities for data analysis, automation, and integration across various platforms. Choosing between them depends on the specific job requirements and the environment in which the developer works.
