What is a union construction flagger?

A Union Construction Flagger is responsible for directing traffic around road construction sites to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians. They use hand signals, flags, and stop/slow paddles to communicate with motorists and may also assist with setting up traffic control devices. Working as a union flagger means being part of a labor union, which can provide benefits like job security, training, and negotiated wages. This role requires attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work in various weather conditions.

What does a union construction flagger do?

A typical day for a Union Construction Flagger involves arriving on site before construction begins, setting up warning signs and safety cones, and coordinating with the crew supervisor to understand the day’s work zones. Throughout the shift, you’ll direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic using signs, hand signals, and occasionally radios to ensure a safe environment for both workers and the public. Flaggers often work in outdoor conditions, sometimes in extreme weather, and must stay vigilant for long periods. Collaboration with other flaggers and construction workers is common, as clear communication and teamwork help prevent accidents and minimize traffic disruptions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union construction flagger?

To thrive as a Union Construction Flagger, you need a solid understanding of traffic control procedures, situational awareness, and the ability to follow safety protocols, typically backed by a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification in flagger training through organizations like the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), as well as familiarity with two-way radios, reflective safety gear, and signage, are often required. Strong communication skills, alertness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help flaggers effectively manage interactions with construction crews and the public. These skills are critical to ensure the safety of workers and motorists, as well as to keep construction projects running smoothly and efficiently.

Are union construction flaggers unionized?

Union construction flaggers are often represented by labor unions that negotiate wages, benefits, and working conditions on their behalf. Many flaggers choose to join unions to access collective bargaining and job protections, but union membership is not mandatory for all flaggers. Unionization varies by region and employer.

How to get a job as a union construction flagger?

To become a union construction flagger, you typically need to complete a flagger training course and obtain certification, such as the OSHA-approved flagger certification. Gaining experience in traffic control and working with construction crews can improve job prospects, and joining a union may require meeting specific eligibility criteria and applying through union apprenticeship programs.
