What is tumbling?

Tumbling is a form of gymnastics that focuses on acrobatic and floor-based skills, such as flips, handsprings, somersaults, and twists, performed without the use of apparatus. It is practiced both as a standalone discipline and as part of other sports like cheerleading, artistic gymnastics, and dance. Tumbling helps improve strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness, making it suitable for all ages and skill levels. Athletes typically train on spring floors or tumble tracks to safely execute and perfect their skills.

What are the main challenges faced by a tumbling coach, and how can they be addressed on the job?

One of the main challenges faced by tumbling coaches is ensuring the safety of athletes while teaching complex movements and skills. Coaches must remain vigilant in spotting, provide clear instructions, and adapt techniques to suit different skill levels. Effective communication with athletes and collaboration with other coaches or gym staff is crucial to maintaining a positive and supportive learning environment. Continual professional development and staying updated with the latest coaching methods can also help overcome these challenges.

Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:
The AMA YMCA is looking for an energetic and engaging Tumbling Instructor to lead our recreational tumbling program for youth ages 18 months to 12 years old. This program focuses on building foundational movement skills, coordination, strength, and confidence in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Weโ€™re seeking an instructor who is comfortable working with a wide range of ages and abilitiesโ€”from parent/child classes introducing basic movement to school-age participants learning progressive tumbling skills. The ideal candidate can confidently teach and demonstrate skills such as forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, backbends, bridges, kickovers, and walkovers, while creating a positive and encouraging class experience for all participants.

OUR CULTURE:
Our mission and core values are brought to life by our culture. In the Y, we strive to strengthen communities with purpose and intentionality every day.

  • We are welcoming: we are open to all. We are a place where you can belong and become.
  • We are genuine: we value you and embrace your individuality.
  • We are hopeful: we believe in you and your potential to become a catalyst in the world.
  • We are nurturing: we support you in your journey to develop your full potential.
  • We are determined: above all else, we are on a relentless quest to make our community strongerโ€”beginning with you.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and instruct introductory and recreational tumbling classes for ages 18 monthsโ€“12 years.
  • Teach age-appropriate skills including basic movement, balance, coordination, and foundational tumbling progressions.
  • Instruct and demonstrate skills such as handstands, cartwheels, backbends, bridges, kickovers, and walkovers, using safe and effective progressions.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the developmental needs of toddlers, preschoolers, and youth participants.
  • Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on guidance when appropriate.
  • Create a fun, structured, and positive learning environment that builds confidence and encourages participation.
  • Ensure safety at all times through proper spotting, supervision, and equipment setup.
  • Communicate with parents regarding class structure, participant progress, and expectations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program space.
  • Uphold the YMCAโ€™s core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support program success.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Previous experience in tumbling, gymnastics, acro, cheer, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to teach and demonstrate basic to intermediate tumbling skills.
  • Experience working with young children (toddlers through youth) strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans.
  • Energetic, patient, and encouraging teaching style.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
