What is the highest paying transcription job?

The highest paying transcription jobs are often specialized roles such as legal or medical transcription, which require additional training and certifications. These positions typically offer higher rates due to the complexity and expertise required, with some experienced professionals earning over $30 per hour or more. Freelance or remote transcription managers overseeing teams may also command higher salaries depending on their experience and scope of work.

What is the difference between Transcription Manager vs Transcriptionist?

AspectTranscription ManagerTranscriptionist
CredentialsOften requires experience in transcription and management skillsTypically needs transcription training or certification
Work EnvironmentOversees teams, manages workflows, and ensures qualityPerforms transcription tasks directly, often remotely
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in companies managing large transcription projectsCommonly employed by transcription service providers and freelancers

The main difference is that a Transcription Manager oversees transcription teams and workflows, focusing on quality control and project management, while a Transcriptionist performs the actual transcription work. The Manager role requires leadership skills and experience, whereas the Transcriptionist role is more hands-on and task-focused.

Will AI replace transcriptionist?

AI transcription tools are increasingly capable of automating basic transcription tasks, but transcriptionists are still needed for complex, nuanced, or high-accuracy work. Transcription managers oversee quality control and may incorporate AI tools into workflows, but human oversight remains essential for ensuring accuracy and handling difficult audio. The role is evolving to include managing AI-assisted processes and maintaining standards.

Are transcriptionists still in demand?

Transcriptionists are still in demand, especially in fields like healthcare, legal, and media where accurate transcription is essential. The rise of speech recognition technology has increased the need for human oversight and editing, maintaining job opportunities for skilled transcriptionists with good listening and typing skills.

What Does a Transcription Manager Do?

A transcription manager works primarily in the medical field. In this role, your job is to transcribe medical dictation that a physician speaks into a portable speaker to ensure that patient records are up to date and accurate. To do this job well, you need to understand health care terminology and any language that is specific to the hospital or office in which you work. You are also in charge of other transcriptionists in this management role, so you need to fairly distribute transcription duties and take on additional responsibilities such as correcting the language of some transcriptions and ensuring transcriptions get completed on time.

What are Transcription Managers?

Transcription Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that transcribe audio or video recordings into written documents. They manage workflows, ensure accuracy and quality standards, and coordinate with clients or internal departments to deliver completed transcriptions on time. Additionally, they may handle hiring, training, and performance evaluations of transcriptionists, and often implement new technologies or processes to improve efficiency. Their role is crucial in industries like healthcare, legal, media, and research where accurate and timely transcription is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Transcription Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transcription Manager, you need expertise in transcription processes, quality assurance, and staff supervision, often supported by experience in medical or legal transcription and a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with transcription software, workflow management systems, and speech recognition tools is typically required. Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills help in managing teams and maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines. These skills ensure efficient operations, high-quality output, and effective team performance in a detail-oriented environment.

Can I transcribe with no experience?

Transcription Manager roles typically require some prior experience or skills in transcription, such as good listening, typing speed, and familiarity with transcription software. While entry-level positions may be available, developing these skills through practice or training can improve your chances of securing a transcription job. Certifications or courses in transcription can also be helpful for beginners.

How does a Transcription Manager typically coordinate and support their team to ensure high-quality and timely delivery of transcripts?

A Transcription Manager is responsible for overseeing a team of transcriptionists, setting clear expectations for accuracy, formatting, and deadlines. They often implement quality control measures, conduct regular audits, and provide feedback or training as needed. Collaboration with project managers or clients may be required to clarify requirements or handle escalations. Managing workloads, reallocating assignments during peak periods, and fostering open communication are key to maintaining team performance and meeting client expectations.

Job description

About Align Turn

Align Turn provides quality assurance for speech training data. We help AI research teams validate audio quality, verify transcripts and timestamps, and ensure models are only trained on the best data. Our distributed teams of transcribers work across many languages — and we're growing fast.

About the Role

We're hiring Transcription Project Managers to each own the transcription pipeline for a single language. You'll be the accountable owner for your language: managing a team of hundreds of remote transcribers, keeping quality high, and delivering accurate transcripts on schedule.

This is a hands-on operational role. You'll spend your days coordinating people, auditing work, unblocking issues, and making sure nothing slips through the cracks.

What You'll Do
  • Own day-to-day transcription operations for your assigned language, delivering high-quality transcripts on time
  • Manage a distributed team of hundreds of transcribers: onboarding, training, scheduling, calibration, and ongoing performance management
  • Track throughput and deadlines, forecast capacity, and escalate risks early
  • Audit transcriber work continuously and provide detailed, actionable feedback to maintain data integrity
  • Maintain and improve training materials, style guides, quizzes, and QA checklists
  • Triage questions from transcribers and resolve edge cases against the style guide
  • Report progress, quality metrics, and blockers to leadership and clients
  • Surface tooling and workflow improvements to streamline operations

What You Bring
  • Strong project management and operational execution skills — you can run a process reliably at scale and hit deadlines
  • Experience managing large distributed teams, contractors, freelancers, or annotators (or comparable coordination experience, e.g. BPO, community management, large volunteer programs)
  • Extreme attention to detail and a high bar for data accuracy
  • Excellent written communication — most of your team interaction is async and in writing
  • Comfort with spreadsheets and tracking tools; able to stay organized across hundreds of people and thousands of files
  • Reliable internet connection and availability for overlap with your team's working hours
Big Plus
  • Fluency in Tamil, Hindi, Spanish, or Tagalog — you'll be able to spot-check transcripts in your language directly
  • Prior experience in transcription, translation, localization, subtitling, or data labeling / annotation operations
  • Experience with QA workflows, audio data, or linguistics
  • Basic technical proficiency (spreadsheet formulas, SQL, Python, or AI coding assistants) to streamline workflows
Details
  • Type: Remote, contract; 2 months
  • Rate: $13–$27 / hour
  • Hours: 20–40 hrs/week
  • Openings: 3
