Position Description
The Subsurface Market Manager is a hybrid role combining the management of operational field personnel and business development activities. This position is responsible for the management and performance of Penhall's field-based Subsurface Analysts working out of Branch locations, while also serving as a business development representative to expand client relationships, widen market share and grow revenue.
The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation and experience in performing concrete and subsurface scanning investigations, has a customer-first mindset, and possesses the communication skills and business acumen necessary to identify opportunities, educate clients, and build long-term partnerships. Additionally, the position has a focus on working closely with Branch Leadership, Account Managers and Regional Business Development roles to coordinate BD Subsurface activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage field-based Subsurface Analysts with a focus on growing individual capabilities and maintaining a high level of accuracy in field investigations of concrete scanning, subsurface utility locating/mapping, as well as X-Ray.
  • Organize, schedule, and facilitate field operations of scheduling, managing travel, and coordinating required resources.
  • Proactively engage clients with a sales process to communicate value-added messaging.
  • Actively pursue new business opportunities through client engagement, identifying prospects, visiting job sites, and networking with key contacts in office environments.
  • Collaborate with Account Managers and Branch Leadership to expand service offerings and cross-sell when appropriate.
  • Create quotes and proposals, and initiate follow-up correspondence with new customers and existing clients to secure sales opportunities.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to customers by explaining results, offering technical guidance, and solving problems on the spot.
  • Partner with Dispatch and Operations to ensure scheduling aligns with customer deadlines and expectations.
  • Track/document client interactions, leads, and opportunities through CRM or sales tracking systems.
  • Represent Penhall at industry events, safety meetings, and project kickoffs when requested.
  • Promote Penhall's commitment to safety and professionalism in every customer interaction.
  • Perform all other duties as needed and/or as assigned.

Safety Leader
    • To help create and maintain a zero-incident culture at Penhall Company.
    • Encourage safe working behaviors and habits in the field and when operating motor vehicles.
    • Conduct weekly meetings with team to focus the employees and allow them to Speak up for Safety.
    • Promote individual responsibility for safe work practices in the field and on the highway.
    • Conduct Behavior Based Safety Observations regularly during field audits (BSOs).
    • Investigate and perform root cause analysis after known strikes.
    • Input safety incidents in EHS software following known strike investigations on subsurface hazards.
    • Educate field personnel on safety standards and best practices.

Trainer
  • Become technically competent in the areas of concrete scanning, subsurface investigations/mapping, and X-Ray.
    • Every Manager will follow the formal training program for all new trainees for all disciplines.
    • Each Manager will use and complete the necessary forms/documents, and examinations detailed in the training program.
    • Managers will continue to mentor and expand skillsets of all Analyst team members.
    • Provide constructive feedback to the trainee during the training program.
    • Help improve training program to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
    • Assist Subsurface Analysts with any technical assistance needed and with equipment repair or replacement.

QA/QC Auditor
    • Each Manager will visit every team member regularly to verify all standard field processes and procedures that are being followed.
    • Work closely with the divisions on performance issues regarding Subsurface Analysts and X-Ray team members.
    • Inform the Subsurface Analysts and division tea members on best practices regarding field marking, reports, and general job site responsibilities.
    • Assure the Subsurface Analysts are following the Standard Marking Protocol consistently and submitting quality field tickets and field reports in a timely manner to the divisions.
    • Ensure lines of communication between Subsurface Analysts and division team members is clear, consistent and flowing both directions, with a high level of detail included when discussing cutting operations post scan.
    • Assist in finding coverage for work when help is limited. Assist in covering work when it is in the best interest of the company.

Salesperson/Estimator
    • Managers will take an active role in the sales process to drive new business. This includes scheduled virtual calls with clients, face to face sales-related calls with clients and conducting lunch and learn meetings with existing and potential clients.
    • Assist local and regional teams with any necessary sales needs (technical expertise, project management, estimating, etc.)
    • Each Manager will be assigned ten (10) new target customers for their region. These targets will dovetail with BD targets in your regions.
    • Subsurface Market Managers with Subsurface Specialists within their region will develop and guide the Subsurface Specialists in project work and sales activities to ensure the Subsurface Specialists' success. This includes performing ride-alongs with them throughout the region and conducting weekly meetings to review CRM opportunities.

Position Requirements
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven field experience with concrete scanning subsurface utility investigations or similar.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional, demonstrate a respectful, courteous demeanor to co-workers, management and the general public at all times.
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage time independently.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.
  • Ability to identify client needs and recommend appropriate services.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competent in report writing and technical documentation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; CRM experience a plus
  • Ability to work in varied environments and travel locally to job sites.
    • Valid and unrestricted driver's license with clean driving record.

Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical education/training certification in related field preferred.
    • 2-3+ years of experience in concrete scanning and/or utility locating.
    • Prior sales or customer-facing experience in construction or industrial services is a strong plus.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and carry field equipment.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor conditions and construction job sites.
  • Requires driving to multiple job locations within a defined territory.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, or crouch for extended periods.
