What is a transcription freelance?

Transcription freelancers are professionals who convert audio or video recordings into written text. They typically work independently, taking on projects from clients across various industries such as legal, medical, academic, or media. These freelancers must have excellent listening skills, attention to detail, and good typing speed. Their work can involve transcribing interviews, meetings, podcasts, or other recorded material, and may include editing and formatting the text to meet specific requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a transcription freelance?

To thrive as a Transcription Freelance professional, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a strong command of grammar and language. Familiarity with transcription software such as Express Scribe, and sometimes knowledge of specialized formats or industry terminology, is often required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality transcripts that meet client expectations and industry standards.

What are common challenges transcription freelances face, and how can they overcome them?

Freelance transcriptionists often encounter challenges such as handling audio with poor quality, managing tight deadlines, and maintaining focus during long projects. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to invest in good headphones and transcription software, communicate clearly with clients about expectations, and schedule regular breaks to prevent fatigue. Joining online transcriptionist communities can also provide support and tips for troubleshooting difficult assignments.

Transcription Freelance refers to independent contractors offering transcription services on a project basis, often through online platforms. Transcribers may work freelance or as employees, but the term generally emphasizes self-employment. Both roles require strong listening and typing skills, with minimal formal credentials. The main difference lies in the work arrangement: freelance transcription offers flexibility and independence, while transcribers may work for companies or agencies. Job description

About TrustScale
TrustScale puts the trust in AI.
Our human intelligence teams support annotation, verification, review, and adjudication workflows where careful human judgment and accuracy matter.
We are looking for experienced verbatim transcription professionals who are exceptionally strong listeners and comfortable working with challenging US English audio at the word level.
What This Role Is
We are currently building a team for an English transcription project focused on producing highly accurate transcripts from audio content.
This is not traditional captioning or clean-read transcription. You will work with audio that has already been automatically segmented at the word level. Each segment includes a proposed word, start time, and end time.
Your job is to listen carefully to the complete audio and determine whether those segments are correct.
You will:
  • Verify the start and end boundary of each spoken word
  • Correct boundaries that begin too early or end too late
  • Verify that the text matches what was actually spoken
  • Correct transcription errors
  • Split a segment when it incorrectly contains multiple words
  • Merge or remove segments when necessary
  • Identify missing word segments
  • Apply spoken-form transcription conventions consistently
  • Review the entire assigned audio file rather than performing a partial review
  • Use careful listening and judgment when boundaries are difficult to distinguish in continuous speech

Accuracy and consistency are more important than speed.
What We Are Looking For
This opportunity is particularly suited to experienced transcription professionals, including candidates with previous experience as:
  • Transcriptionists
  • Transcription Reviewers
  • QA/QC specialists
  • Senior transcriptionists
  • Adjudicators or similar quality-focused roles

We are looking for candidates who have:
  • Native or near-native proficiency in English.
  • Demonstrated professional transcription experience.
  • Excellent listening and comprehension skills.
  • Strong typing skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with transcription guidelines and quality standards.
  • The ability to consistently deliver accurate, high-quality work.
  • Strong quality-control and error-identification skills.
  • Reliable availability throughout the project.

Previous experience in transcription review, QA, QC, or adjudication is highly valued, as successful contributors may have the opportunity to progress to higher-level review/adjudication responsibilities based on performance.
Qualification Proces
The qualification process is unpaid and consists of multiple stages.
Step 1 Transcription Test
Candidates must first complete a short transcription test.
  • Link: here . Please register using a Gmail.
  • Passing score: 90%
  • The test is automatically graded.
  • Candidates who pass will be invited to continue to the project-specific qualification.

Step 2 Project Qualification
Candidates who successfully complete the initial transcription test will receive access to the project test and relevant guidelines/training materials.
Progression to production will depend on successfully demonstrating an understanding of the task and meeting the required quality standards.
What we offer
  • Fully remote freelance work.
  • Opportunity to work on a professional AI data/transcription project.
  • Potential progression toward Reviewer / Adjudicator responsibilities based on performance.
  • Training materials and ongoing project support.
  • Opportunity to be considered for future transcription and quality-focused projects.

Quality is our top priority. Contributors are expected to maintain consistent accuracy and follow project guidelines throughout production.
How to apply
Please submit your application through this job posting. If your profile matches our requirements, we will provide the link to the initial transcription test and instructions for the qualification process.
Candidates with previous transcription review, QA, QC, or adjudication experience are especially encouraged to apply.
