Training specialists are human resources professionals who design and implement professional development programs to improve employee performance. As a training specialist, your job duties include running orientation classes for new staff members, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of employees, and leading employee training and continuing education sessions. You also monitor employee performance over a period of time to evaluate retention of new policies and techniques taught in training sessions. Because training specialists need to communicate well to a room full of people, excellent communication skills are required for this position.
| Aspect | Training Specialist | Instructional Designer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a bachelor's degree in education, HR, or related field; certifications like ATD or CPTD are common | Usually a bachelor's or master's in education, instructional design, or related fields; certifications like ATD ID or ISTD are beneficial |
| Work Environment | Corporate training departments, educational institutions, or government agencies | Educational institutions, corporate training teams, e-learning companies |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used across various industries for employee development and onboarding | Primarily in education, e-learning, and corporate training for curriculum development |
While both roles focus on training and education, a Training Specialist primarily delivers training sessions and manages training programs, whereas an Instructional Designer develops instructional materials and e-learning content. The roles often overlap, but Instructional Designers tend to focus more on curriculum creation and course design, while Training Specialists focus on facilitation and delivery.
