What is a Temporary SLP job?

A Temporary Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) job is a short-term position where an SLP works with individuals to assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders. These roles may be available due to staff shortages, maternity leaves, or seasonal needs in schools, healthcare facilities, or private practices. Temporary SLPs perform the same duties as permanent SLPs, including developing treatment plans and collaborating with other professionals. The duration of these positions can vary, ranging from a few weeks to several months.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Temporary Slp position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist), you need a master's degree in speech-language pathology, state licensure, and experience evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders. Familiarity with assessment tools, therapy materials, and electronic documentation systems is essential. Flexibility, strong organizational skills, and clear interpersonal communication help Temporary SLPs adapt quickly to new environments and collaborate effectively with different teams. These competencies ensure quality care and smooth integration into various clinical or educational settings, even for short-term placements.

What can I expect in terms of team structure and collaboration as a Temporary SLP?

As a Temporary SLP, you will typically join established teams in hospitals, schools, or rehabilitation centers, working closely with permanent staff such as teachers, nurses, occupational therapists, and other SLPs. You may collaborate with professionals to develop individualized treatment plans, share progress updates, and coordinate care for your clients or students. Temporary SLPs are often expected to adapt quickly to new teams and workflows, but supportive onboarding and open communication help facilitate this transition. This collaborative environment enhances the quality of therapy and ensures continuity of care, even during temporary assignments.

Job description

Temporary Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
Location: Crossroads School | Marlborough, MA
Employment Type: 6+ months contract
Reports To: Speech & Language Services Coordinator
About Crossroads Continuum
Crossroads Continuum is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with autism to learn, grow, and thrive. Through evidence-based, compassionate programming, we support students across developmental, communication, and behavioral domains-partnering closely with families, school districts, and interdisciplinary teams.
Speech-language pathology is a cornerstone of our educational model, and our SLPs play a critical leadership role in shaping meaningful communication outcomes for students.
Temporary SLP Position Summary
The Temporary Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) will provide speech and language services during a parental leave coverage period and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized speech and language programming aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role provides both direct and consultative services, collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, and utilizes ABA-informed practices to support communication, learning, and functional independence.
The Temporary SLP will serve as an integral member of the clinical and educational team, supporting speech-related programming, collaborating with experienced clinicians and PhD-level BCBAs, and helping ensure high-quality, data-driven services for students. This role is ideal for a clinician who is adaptable, collaborative, and prepared to step into a fast-paced, highly supportive environment with a strong AAC focus.
Temporary Clinical Fellowship Opportunity
This temporary Speech-Language Pathologist position is designed to provide coverage for a parental leave and is anticipated to last a minimum of six (6) months. Crossroads Continuum is also open to candidates completing their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) and welcomes passionate clinicians who are eager to grow within a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
While this role is temporary in nature, it may serve as a strong opportunity for future employment consideration or continued collaboration with Crossroads Continuum based on organizational needs and performance.
The selected candidate will join an experienced and supportive clinical team that includes:
  • A collaborative team of seven additional Speech and Language staff members
  • PhD-level BCBAs and experienced clinical leadership
  • Interdisciplinary educational and behavioral teams dedicated to student success
Approximately 70% of our school population utilizes some form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), making AAC experience, flexibility, and a readiness to "hit the ground running" especially important for success in this role.
This is an exciting opportunity for a clinician who is passionate about autism, communication, interdisciplinary teamwork, and evidence-based practice in a highly specialized educational setting.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Educational Services
  • Conduct speech-language assessments, including initial evaluations, three-year evaluations, AAC evaluations, and related reports.
  • Develop and implement individualized speech and language goals, objectives, and service delivery models.
  • Provide direct therapy and consultative services using best practices in speech-language pathology and ABA.
  • Analyze data and student progress to make timely, appropriate programmatic adjustments.
  • Review quarterly progress reports and amend IEPs as needed.
  • Program, implement, and support Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
  • Train staff and team members on AAC use, speech goals, and generalization strategies.
  • Support Functional Communication Training (FCT) and speech goal generalization across environments.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with teachers, behavior specialists, administrators, families, school districts, and external consultants.
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents regarding speech and language programming.
  • Coordinate schedules to support Student Days, IEP meetings, TEAM meetings, and service delivery.
  • Communicate concerns related to progress, safety, or family needs to appropriate leadership.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Crossroads Continuum and model professionalism and ethical practice.
Leadership & Supervision
  • Act as a team leader and positive role model for staff and students.
  • Supervise and support Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs).
  • Assist the Speech & Language Services Coordinator with supervision and staff development.
  • Support hiring efforts, including interviewing and student intake observations, as requested.
  • Lead Monthly Speech Consistency Meetings to ensure programming fidelity and progress.
Student Support & School Participation
  • Ensure supervision and safety of assigned students.
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including toileting and showering, as needed.
  • Participate in field trips, community outings, swimming activities, and extracurricular events.
  • Transport students and staff to community locations when required.
  • Maintain CALM certification and utilize CALM techniques to ensure safety.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including session notes, attendance, and Medicaid billing.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Licensure
  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • Current Massachusetts licensure in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) preferred (minimum 2 years preferred).

  • Experience with ABA-based treatment for individuals with autism strongly preferred.
Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Compassionate, patient, dependable, and mission driven.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and high ethical standards.
