POSITION PURPOSE:
Plans, assigns, monitors, reviews, and supervises the work of custodians at assigned school sites and/or facility. Inspects assigned work of contractors and ensures communication of incomplete or unsatisfactory work to appropriate contact. Trains, advises, and demonstrates to custodians work methods, practices, and procedures for completing job assignments. Informs custodial staff of worksite and district policies and procedures related to the job assignments and enforces safety rules and regulations. Performs a variety of custodial work at assigned school sites and/or facility. Maintains and submits the required written documents relevant to the position. Attends required trainings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
  • Working knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work;
  • Working knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with others;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete required employee trainings provided by Wake County Public School System (WCPSS);
  • Ability to ensure assigned work orders are completed by custodians;
  • Ability to use all assigned equipment in a safe manner per manufacturer's specifications;
  • Ability to learn and consistently follow safety precautions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorneys, parents, and the public.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Two years of directly related experience;
  • Demonstrated successful supervisory or leadership experience;
  • Required WCPSS trainings which will be provided post-employment.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience performing custodial work in a commercial/school setting;
  • Supervisory experience in a custodial related role in a commercial/school setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assigns areas, projects, and work orders to custodians.
  2. Trains custodians by hands-on demonstration and personal examples.
  3. Evaluates daily work of other custodians and makes appropriate recommendations; provides feedback and input of custodian's performance to school administrator for annual evaluations; inspects assigned work of contractors and communicates incomplete or unsatisfactory work to appropriate contact.
  4. Ensures entire school/facility is sanitized, cleaned, and maintained (e.g., hard surface and carpeted floors, restrooms, waste disposal, windows, locker rooms, sweeps walkways outside of buildings, polices grounds, picks up debris, shovels snow, and applies de-icing compounds to walkways, as necessary.)
  5. Reviews custodial supply inventory and places orders according to procedures.
  6. Moves and arranges furniture, as needed.
  7. Performs maintenance checks and makes minor or preventative maintenance on custodial equipment; reports major repair needs, safety concerns, and school property damage to supervisor.
  8. At the start and end of workdays, opens/secures buildings, turns lights on/off, as scheduled.
  9. Maintains reliable and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  10. Responds to after hour emergencies and inclement weather calls, as required.
  11. Performs other related duties, as assigned (including temporary work at different assigned site).

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a school environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely operate vacuum cleaners, carpet extracting machine, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, contractors, students, parents, and community members that might use school facilities. Work is considered medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work involves pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, maneuvering in confined spaces, and prolonged standing and walking. Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures and smells commonly associated with schools in general. Some work will be outdoor work, potentially in inclement weather.
