Job description

Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced GIS Field Technician - Civil Infrastructure to support transportation and infrastructure assessment projects, with current temporary deployment supporting a federal agency in Tennessee. This position is responsible for collecting, managing, and analyzing field data related to roadway and transportation infrastructure conditions using GIS technologies, mobile data collection platforms, and field assessment methodologies.
The ideal candidate will have direct experience supporting road condition assessments or similar transportation infrastructure projects and possess strong field operations experience in remote or rugged environments.

Duty Station:Cleveland, TN (On the road/In the Field)
Travel: Up to 100%
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform roadway and transportation infrastructure condition assessments in field environments.
  • Collect, validate, and manage GIS and GPS-based field data for civil infrastructure assets.
  • Conduct inspections of roads, culverts, drainage systems, signage, and related transportation infrastructure.
  • Utilize GIS software and mobile data collection applications to update and maintain geospatial datasets.
  • Support transportation asset inventory and condition documentation efforts.
  • Produce accurate field reports, maps, photographs, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to ensure timely completion of project objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with project standards, safety requirements, and quality control procedures.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, tablets, cameras, and data collection devices.
  • Navigate and work safely in remote, rugged, and environmentally challenging terrain.
  • Support temporary field operations associated with federal infrastructure and land management projects in Tennessee.
  • Travel to project sites and work extended field schedules as required.
  • Assist with data review, quality assurance, and preparation of deliverables for clients and stakeholders.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal teams and external project partners.
  • Follow all company policies, field safety protocols, and operational procedures.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience with road condition assessments and transportation infrastructure documentation.
  • Proficiency with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Collector/Field Maps, Survey123, or equivalent platforms
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance and infrastructure recovery processes.
  • Ability to interpret basic road design and drainage features.
  • Experience collecting field measurements and geospatial data accurately.
  • Ability to work safely in rugged outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions.

Education and Experience:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geomatics, or a related field.
  • Required:Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in GIS field operations, transportation infrastructure assessments, or related civil infrastructure projects.
  • Preferred:Experience supporting FEMA, USFS, FHWA, or other disaster recovery programs.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with transportation asset management programs and roadway condition assessment methodologies.
  • Preferred: Experience operating off-road vehicles and towing equipment.
  • Preferred: OSHA 10/30 or other field safety certifications

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Ability to work extended hours in outdoor and remote environments.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and storm-damaged areas.
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying field equipment.
  • Ability to travel and deploy for multi-day field assignments.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field assignments.
